Many years ago I was flying home to New Mexico from a vacation on the east coast. As we came throught the cloud cover, the person in the window seat exclaimed, "@#!#, its so brown, and ugly too." To which I smiled and said, "Yes, and it is home."  The visitor quickly started back peddling and I laughed, knowing that he was still thinking the same thing, but trying to sound more optimistic.

There are many things I love about the desert I live in. The mountains and rock formations are probably top of the list. 300+ days of bright blue sunshine would be next. I also really enjoy some things that hard in this area. One is kayaking and the other is gardening. Having lived in a place where they planted rocks to get the grass to stop growing, I appreciate the time, planning and care it takes to grow a garden in less than 15 inches of rain a year.

But, many many people do it anyway and that is what I hope to share is my love for gardening in New Mexico.

During the first couple months of the year I always get a little bored waiting for spring. I can’t start seeds until about the 3rd week of February. So, I think of other things that I can do in preparation for the season. This year I will be sterilizing some of my soil in my solar oven. Our desert climate has plenty of sunny days in the winter. We can reach temperatures of at least 250° F all year around.

Each year about this time, I open up this site and start thinking of what to do with it. I have for several years dreamed of running a blog or forum for people trying to coax life out of a high desert area (or any desert for that matter). The high desert is a little harder than the Phoenix area because of the growing season, but both suffer from a lack of annual rainfall.

I think this year may be the one. I have started several new projects worth writing about. My research is starting to turn into action and I am having fun experimenting. All of these things are the makings for a good blog. I still hope to implement a forum where people can ask questions and share experiences.

More to come soon!
